지난 주에 포스팅 했던 티벳 사태의 평화적인 해결을 위한 서명 운동에 많은 분들이 참여하신 것으로 알고 있습니다. 블로그를 통해 그 내용을 소개했던 한 사람으로서 여러분의 참여에 감사드립니다. 서명을 하신 분들은 캠페인을 주관하고 있는 Avaaz.org 로부터 캠페인의 진행 상황을 알리는 영문 이메일을 몇 통 받으셨을 겁니다. 그 중 가장 최근에 온 이메일 한 통을 간단히 번역해서 올립니다.
제가 받은 이메일에 따르면 생각보다 빨리 당초 목표했던 100만명의 서명을 얻었고 이제는 200만명 서명을 받기 위해 노력하고 있다고 합니다. 그리고 지금 모이고 있는 서명들은 다음 주 월요일(3월 31일)에 세계 각 국의 중국 대사관에 전달될 것이라고 합니다. 다시 한 번 서명에 참여해 주신 분들께 감사드립니다. 비록 간단한 서명이지만 이것을 통해 전세계인들이 관심을 가지고 지켜보고 있다는 사실을 중국 정부는 알게 될 것입니다. 그리고 그 사실이 중국 정부의 사태해결을 위한 노력에 영향을 미칠 수 있기를 바랍니다.

티벳 사태에 대해 대화와 인권 존중을 요청하는 우리들의 서명 캠페인이 시작된지 7일만에 백 만명이 참여했습니다. 이것은 가장 단기간에 가장 많은 사람을 모은 기록적인 인터넷 서명 운동이 되었습니다. 지난 수 십년간 티벳에서는 불의가 자행되었고 마침내 티벳인들은 전세계를 향해 변화를 소리 높이 외쳤습니다. 그리고 이제 전세계가 그 목소리에 답하고 있습니다.

(지금)전세계인들의 엄청난 힘이 그의 주목을 끌기 위해 움직이고 있습니다. 우리는 폭동과 분리주의가 위험한 불안정 상태를 초래할 수도 있다고 걱정하는 중국 지도자들의 염려를 인정합니다. 그러나 우리는 중국의 발전과 안정은 억압이 아니라 대화와 존중에 달려있다는 달라이라마의 주장을 지지합니다.

China's hardliners are lashing out publicly at the Dalai Lama--but many Chinese leaders believe dialogue is the best hope for stability in Tibet.Governments around the world have begun calling for dialogue, and there are many hopeful signs that, if we can keep the pressure up, China will agree. Already, we have had constructive discussions with Chinese officials about the message of our campaign.
Chinese President Hu Jintao values his country's international reputation, and he needs to hear from us that the 'Made in China' brand and the upcoming Olympics in Beijing will succeed only if he chooses dialogue over the hardliners' repression. An avalanche of global people power is moving to get his attention. Our petition recognizes the concerns of Chinese leaders that riots and separatism could lead to dangerous instability. But we supp ort the position of the Dalai Lama,that the best path to stability and development for China lies through dialogue and respect, not repression.
This is the most promising moment in decades to address theinjustices of Tibet - but already the media is moving on to otherstories. We need to seize this moment with a massive statement ofglobal support this Monday -- for the next four days, let's pull out all the stops for Tibet.
